"Holtec" and "EDF" have submitted an application to construct four small SMR-300 reactors at the site of a former coal-fired power plant in the UK.
The American company Holtec International and the French EDF have submitted a joint application for the installation of up to four small modular reactors SMR-300 at the site of the Cottam power station in Nottinghamshire, United Kingdom. In addition, the companies signed a memorandum of intent to create a joint venture to implement the project at the site of the former coal station, which is already connected to the power grid and was decommissioned in 2019.
Last September, Holtec had already signed a memorandum with EDF Energy and Tritax Management for the joint development of the SMR-300 project at the Cottam site to provide energy for the data centers being built there. The partners note that the project will attract foreign direct investment to the United Kingdom. In particular, the companies Framatome and Arabelle Solutions plan to establish nuclear fuel and equipment manufacturing in the country.
The launch of the 1 GW data center is scheduled for the end of this decade, while the reactors will be put into operation in the 2030s.
