Kazakhstan has officially decided to construct a second nuclear power plant.
The government of Kazakhstan has decided to build a second nuclear power plant (NPP). The corresponding resolution, signed by the country's Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov on January 26, has been published in the information and legal system of regulatory legal acts of Kazakhstan.
According to the text of the document, the second NPP is planned to be built in the Jambyl district of the Almaty region of Kazakhstan. The resolution comes into effect from the day of its signing.
Several NPPs are planned to be built in Kazakhstan. The first will be constructed by "Rosatom," and the construction of the station is expected to take approximately 11 years and may be completed in 2035-2036. Research work near the village of Ulken on Lake Balkhash started on August 8, 2025.
The construction of the second and third NPPs has been entrusted to the Chinese China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC).
