Moldova is discussing with the United States the construction of a small modular nuclear reactor.

The Ministry of Energy of Moldova is considering the possibility of constructing a small modular nuclear reactor (SMNR) as part of strategic cooperation with the United States. This issue was discussed at a meeting between the Moldovan minister and representatives of the U.S. Nuclear Energy Institute.

The Ministry of Energy stated that the American side expressed its readiness to provide expert support for developing Moldova's technical potential in the field of nuclear energy.

According to the International Atomic Energy Agency, SMNRs are modern reactors with a capacity of up to 300 MW, which occupy a smaller footprint and can be located where the construction of large nuclear power plants is not feasible.

Earlier such projects were also discussed in Romania: with U.S. support there are plans to build the first SMNR complex in Europe on the site of a former CHP plant, using six modules.
